Questioning in Math

Over the last 11 years, we have been going deeper in math through questioning.  Questioning isn't something that can be done in a lesson and checked off a list as done, but rather questioing in something we do every day as a part of a classroom culture of thinking.  Some examples of questioning in my classroom are in the current unit of study students are studying exponential functions, but are asked to make connections to the last 2 years of thinking about linear and directly proportional and make connections between the 4 representations of the 3 functions.  As they compare and contrast and notice, their thinking is privledged and they gain not only greater understanding, but greater confidence in their mathematical abilities.  I also had my students watch a video about scientific notation and asked them what they noticed.  We had deep meaningful conversation about how this related to their learnings about place value when they were in early elementary school.  This became not about memorization of how to "do the process" of moving the decimal place, but rather an understanding of how prior knowledge could make sense of the process that they developed.  BTW... if anyone actually reads this, please ignore the run on sentences and lack of grammatical correctness.  Thanks and have a great day.

  1. I think that is great to show a video that represents real world representations of the scientific notation. I feel like it helps students to 1) see how it can relate to their lives and 2) as you said, help them to try to find patterns and make sense of what is happening. I like that you referenced back to previous material from the last 2 years, to bring out that thinking.
